Are you dreaming of having fresh, natural highlights in your hair, so you can get that summer look?

Highlights give the hair a brighter appearance and make it look thicker. A mix of light and dark hair creates a beautiful interplay, and here’s a simple recipe for getting those blonde highlights in your hair in a completely natural way.

Saltwater and sunlight have a bleaching effect on your hair. It may seem paradoxical that the sun gives us more colour in our skin while making our hair lighter.

The reason for this is simply that while our skin is "alive", all hair is basically "dead". The sun bleaches the melanin in the hair and this makes the hair lighter. Therefore, many people associate summer with lighter hair and beautiful highlights.

How to Create Natural Highlights

If you want to use sunlight to bleach your hair, you need to arm yourself with a good amount of patience - and maybe wait all summer before you see the big effect.

But to achieve the desired result much faster, you can cheat a little. You can easily do this by using lemon or salt water in your hair.

All you need for the recipe below is a bottle of lemon juice and a clean spray bottle.

Lemon Spray to Create Natural Highlights

  • Mix two parts warm water and one part lemon juice in a clean spray bottle.
  • Wet the entire hair or just the parts you want to bleach.
  • Spray the lemon mixture into wet hair.
  • Sit in the sun for 1-2 hours to activate the lemon juice.
  • Rinse thoroughly, and preferably use a hair treatment afterwards.

Salt Water for Natural Highlights

You can also get sun-bleached hair with an effective salt water mixture. You can get the recipe here:

  • Dissolve a tablespoon of salt in half a cup of warm water and pour into a clean spray bottle.
  • Spray the salt mixture in the hair or in the parts of the hair that you want to bleach.
  • Sit in the sun for 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and give the hair a hair treatment or other care afterwards.

Take Good Care of Your Hair!

It is a good idea to give your hair lots of care and nourishment afterwards. A good hair treatment moisturises, cares for and nourishes your hair in depth.

Also remember that it is important to supply your hair with the most important vitamins from the inside out, such as biotin, vitamins C, D and E and, not least, zinc. Zinc contributes to maintaining normal hair and protecting cells from oxidative stress.
